Guided Tours

Enthusiastic and knowledgeable museum docents, or tour guides, are available to make sure that you get the most out of your visit to the Pearl. The museum education staff can recommend, or even design, a visit to suit your group’s needs!

Docent Tours
Reservations

To arrange a docent-led tour please call 281-376-6322 or send an email request. Please make all requests at least 2 weeks in advance, and note that requests are subject to availability.

Cost

There is no charge for a docent-led tour.  You may consider making a donation to the museum during your visit or online, or supporting our education programs through museum membership.

Length of Your Visit

Most tours last approximately 45 minutes.  For a typical docent-led tour, we recommend that you budget one hour to allow for the tour and looking around on your own.

Add an Art Project!

Maximize your museum visit by adding an art project to your tour! For $5 per participant, visiting groups can make a work of art related to the Pearl’s current exhibitions. The projects are developed and led by Education Department staff.  The art project fee helps the museum offset costs related to supplies and instruction. There is no charge for chaperones or younger siblings.

Parking

Convenient visitor parking is located on the east side of the Pearl.  Buses are encouraged to drop off visitors on the west side of the building and then park in the Harris County lot south of the museum (next to the Barbara Bush Library). The museum’s visitor parking is narrow, making it difficult for long vehicles to turn around. Instructions for Bus Drivers.

School Tours

The Pearl offers docent tours and hands-on activities for school groups throughout the school year. The museum hosts students from area public, private, and home schools. Tours are inquiry-based and age appropriate for student visitors. Though taking a large number of students off-campus can be complex, these tips will assist you in planning a memorable learning experience for your school. To schedule a tour for your school, contact us by phone at 281-376-6322.

Scheduling Your Field Trip

The first step in planning your school tour is to schedule a date on the museum calendar. You can contact the museum by phone at 281-376-6322 or by email to make a tour request. You should have an approximate number of classes that will attend and grade level. The final number of students will be confirmed prior to the field trip date. You can also request a specific project or tour emphasis at this time.

Chaperones

In an effort to provide a safe environment for your students, the schools are required to provide 1 teacher/chaperone for every 10 students.  The best rule of thumb is 2 teachers/staff/chaperones per class. The field trip volunteers cannot take the students anywhere on the field trip without a school staff member, especially the restrooms. A teacher or staff member must stay with the class while the other chaperone accompanies the student to the restroom, water fountain, to get a tissue, etc. All school staff must wear school district-issued name badges to identify themselves. Parent chaperones should wear the visitor nametags issued by the school. Teachers should verify that all students are accounted for at all times during the field trip.

Note: Teachers that come to care for a specific student should not be counted in the overall number of chaperones.

In Case of Illness or Emergency

Prior to coming on the field trip, each school should have a plan in place in the case that a student needs to return to school because of illness or any other reason. In the case of illness or any other emergency during the field trip, please contact a museum staff person immediately.  During school tours, museum staff are stationed in the galleries and at the museum front desk.  You can also send your volunteer or docent to locate a staff member. If a student needs to be removed from a field trip location, staff can advise a school representative on designated areas where the student can be taken.

Parking

Buses are encouraged to drop off students on the west side of the building and then park in the Harris County lot south of the museum and next to the Barbara Bush Library. The museum’s visitor parking is narrow, making it difficult for long vehicles to safely turn around. See our page, Instructions for Bus Drivers.

For Bus Drivers

Getting to the Pearl

Buses can turn off of Cypresswood Drive into the driveway between the Cypress Creek Christian Community Center and the Museum. If buses take this route, they must drive past the museum and library, and into the County Parking Lot to turn around. After turning around, the bus would go back down the driveway in the opposite direction and pull up to the museum on the right. This way the bus is facing the appropriate direction (toward Cypresswood Drive) and passengers can unload the buses without crossing the street.

Alternate Route

Depending on what direction they are coming from, the bus drivers may choose to turn onto York Minister and then turn left into the County Parking Lot. The buses would then turn left onto the previously mentioned driveway and continue past the Barbara Bush Library. Again, this way the bus is facing the correct direction and the students can unload the buses without crossing the street. In this case, the museum entrance will be on the right.

Pick-Up/Drop-Off Location

Buses will pull up to the west entrance of the museum, which faces the Cypress Creek Christian Center. The bus door should be facing the museum or east.
